OPINION by Rick Thompson

At 17 I moved to Columbus Ohio to work and attend the Institute. If you don’t know, Columbus is The Proving Ground for national chain restaurants like Wendy’s. Every crazy food you can think of had a restaurant in Columbus Ohio, many of which never took off and were successful.

Michigan is the Columbus Ohio for cannabis brands. We have Ol’ Wheezy, Lil’ Cheesy, High Times and a million other Wanna Be Cannabis Stars launching products in our state.

What Columbus Ohio knows about food is the same thing that Michigan knows about cannabis. The name will help you make your first sale. And that’s it. If you don’t have a quality product, if your pricing is not right, it doesn’t matter whose name is on the package.

High quality + familiar name + competitive pricing = a smash hit. We cannabis people love our industry icons! We just don’t love overpaying for them.

I see companies coming to our state and partnering with people that put out a bunch of crap. I will enjoy watching those Brands fail. Your identity is established by the consumption experience, not the branding.
