WHAT: Food tent serving the needy on Flint’s east side is having a back-to-school backpack giveaway
WHEN: Sunday September 8 at 5:00 pm (media should arrive by 4:30)
WHERE: Corner of Leith and Franklin Streets, Flint, former location of the Leith Food Mart (1900 Leith Street, Flint)
For two years the Flint City Pop-Up Help Tent project has served food to the needy residents of one Flint east side neighborhood each Sunday at 5pm. This Sunday that group will host a large event with free food, backpacks and school supplies for the neighborhood’s children. Supplies are unfortunately limited. Also offered: free haircuts for kids. There will be games and fun for the children.
The corner is a half-block from the shuttered Lowell Junior High school and is ringed with failed commercial buildings and burned-out homes. The neighborhood’s residents are not homeless but are part of the city’s underserved community. Nearby murals, a new playground at Whaley Elementary and the indomitable spirit of Flint residents are all positive aspects of this proud community.
The Help Tent is staffed by volunteers and is registered with the City of Flint for food distribution. Interviews with children, staffers, residents and others will be available. Video is welcome. Additional parking is available across the street from the food serving area.
