Michigan’s 10 Most Influential People in Marijuana
This list is presented alphabetically, not in order of importance.
7. Senator Rick Jones
A former Sheriff of Eaton County, Senator Jones has sponsored, modified or killed nearly every bill related to medical marijuana since Michigan’s program began in 2009. Then he was Chair of the House Judiciary Committee; now he sits as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. In that role he changed and altered the content of the Medical Marihuana Facilities Licensing Act so badly that his other Committee members refused to vote the bill package out of Committee, forcing Jones and Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof to use a rare legislative trick to pull the bills out of Committee without a vote and place them directly on the Senate floor. His many anti-patient actions include sponsoring and passing the Landlord/Tenant Bill, making it easier for rental agencies to evict medical marijuana patients; rough treatment of patients during Committee hearings, including limiting speeches and ejecting patient/Iraqui War veteran Dakota Serna from Committee hearing; fast-tracking controversial bills supported by business interests and law enforcement, including the Pharmaceutical Grade Medical Marihuana Program (passed in three months) and the 2017 Public Act 105 (passed both houses in just 16 days). Jones is term limited as a Senator, with his seat turning over at the end of 2018.
